Public Decisions Database

This database contains decisions on all public judicial disciplinary cases since the inception of the commission in 1960. Cases not involving public charges or public discipline remain confidential under the California Constitution and the commission’s rules.

Pursuant to amendments to the Constitution, which took effect in March 1995, the commission is authorized to impose all disciplinary sanctions, subject to discretionary review by the Supreme Court. Prior to that, the Supreme Court had the authority to censure or remove judges from office upon recommendation by the commission.

Summary

The commission issued a public admonishment for several instances of misconduct in which Judge Meyer engaged. In April 2018, Judge Meyer met in chambers with Long Beach police officers and later drafted a letter, addressed to the Long Beach Chief of Police, on the officers’ behalf. In May 2018, Judge Meyer wrote a second letter to the chief of police, attempting to retract and clarify statements in the first letter and to say that the first letter was a draft. Judge Meyer wrote the letters on official court stationery that contained the superior court seal and Judge Meyer’s signature (typeface on the first letter and original on the second letter). The letters also used Judge Meyer’s judicial title.

Judge Meyer’s misconduct was aggravated by prior discipline.
