Public Decisions Database

This database contains decisions on all public judicial disciplinary cases since the inception of the commission in 1960. Cases not involving public charges or public discipline remain confidential under the California Constitution and the commission’s rules.

Pursuant to amendments to the Constitution, which took effect in March 1995, the commission is authorized to impose all disciplinary sanctions, subject to discretionary review by the Supreme Court. Prior to that, the Supreme Court had the authority to censure or remove judges from office upon recommendation by the commission.

Summary

Judge Geiler engaged in 23 instances of misconduct, including brandishing a dildo in chambers and using the incident to curtail a public defender's cross-examination during trial. The judge grabbed a court commissioner by the testicles, profanely and abusively reprimanded court employees, made lustful references to his court clerk, used vulgar and profane language in his conversations with his clerk and discussed evidence in sex and rape cases using profane language. Also, the judge interfered with the attorney-client relationship by making arbitrary rulings and by relieving the public defender in eight cases out of animosity toward that office.
